English-Proficiency Requirement

If your three most recent years of full-time education have been in a language other than English, you must submit a minimum score on an English-language test or submit an academic English preparation program that meets Laurier's minimum requirements.

You may request an exemption if have successfully studied in an English-language school system on a full-time basis for a minimum of three years, without completing any English as a Second Language courses. If it has been more than 2 years since the completion of this education, we will request an English language test.

We reserve the right to request a test of English proficiency when reviewing your application. 

Conditional Offers of Admission

If you meet the academic requirements for your program but do not meet Laurier’s English language requirement, you may receive an offer of admission that is conditional upon completing the LEAF program. You must first be eligible for LEAF program levels 3, 4 or 5 to receive an offer. After successfully completing level 5, you can begin studying in your program full time. 

Laurier English & Academic Foundation (LEAF) Program

The LEAF program is an academic English program designed to prepare you for success in university. You begin in a LEAF program level according to your most recent English proficiency test score. The LEAF program is offered at the Brantford campus.

In Level 5 of the LEAF program, you are required to complete a course for credit, which helps you get a head start towards completing your degree. To complete the LEAF program successfully, you must achieve a minimum grade of 70% in each LEAF program course, complete a half-credit university course and obtain a minimum overall average of 70% in Level 5.

LEAF Program Terms

There are two 14-week terms (fall and winter) and two 8-week intensive summer terms in each calendar year. The 14-week terms are the same length as our fall and winter undergraduate terms, allowing LEAF program students to interact with both domestic and international students during the busiest times of the year.  

  • Winter: January – April
  • Spring: April – June
  • Summer: June – August
  • Fall: September – December

Test Score
Minimum TOEFL Score Internet-based testing: an overall score of 83 or higher with a minimum score of 20 in each component.
Paper-based testing: 560 or higher.
Minimum IELTS Score An overall score of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each band.
Minimum CAEL Score 70 overall or higher (each band 60 or higher).
PTE (Pearson Test of English) An overall score of 59 or higher.
Other Test Scores Cambridge Assessment English An overall score of 176.
